Antipolo shrine joins Pope Leo’s global rosary for peace

The International Shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage in Antipolo City will join Pope Leo XIV in a worldwide rosary prayer for peace, linking Filipino devotees with pilgrims gathered at the Vatican.

The Vatican announced that the pope will preside over the recitation of the Holy Rosary on May 30 at the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes in the Vatican Gardens.

The prayer event continues the pope’s repeated appeals for peace amid ongoing global conflicts and humanitarian crises.

According to the Vatican, shrines around the world were invited to unite spiritually with the pope, together with their pilgrims and faithful.

The Antipolo shrine in the Philippines was among the major Marian shrines thar already confirmed participation in the initiative.

Other participating shrines include those in Fatima, Portugal; Lourdes, France; Medjugorje, Bosnia and Herzegovina; Loreto, Italy; Zarvanytsia, Ukraine; and the Shrine of St. Charbel in Lebanon.

The prayer initiative is being organized by the Dicastery for Evangelization’s section for fundamental questions regarding evangelization in the world.

The Vatican said pilgrims may also follow the rosary from St. Peter’s Square through giant screens installed for the gathering.

Ahead of the global rosary event, Bishop Ruperto Santos of Antipolo met Pope Leo during the pontiff’s weekly general audience in St. Peter’s Square on May 27.

Santos, accompanied by his clergy, personally greeted the pope after the audience and presented an image of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, the centuries-old Marian icon venerated by Filipino pilgrims.

In a statement, the Antipolo diocese encouraged the faithful to unite spiritually with the pope and devotees worldwide during the Marian prayer service.

“While the Vatican gathers in the evening, the local Church will rise at 1:00 a.m. Philippine time to join hearts across the world in one voice of hope,” the diocese said.

The diocese described the gathering as “a simple yet profound call” to entrust the world to the Blessed Virgin Mary, while carrying “the cries of the suffering and the longing for peace into God’s presence.”

“It is an invitation to stand as one family of faith, bridging Antipolo and Rome, and reminding us that true peace begins when hearts are united in prayer,” the statement added. (With reports from Norman Dequia)
