Cardinal Tagle says ‘no excuse’ for ignoring the poor

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle on Sunday called on Filipinos to care for one another, especially the poor, saying ‘there’s no excuse’ for ignoring those in need.
Speaking during Mass on the ninth World Day of the Poor, he said the observance invites people “to be mindful of our brothers and sisters in need.”
“We all came to this world with nothing. We’re all naked. All pretensions that ‘I’m higher, I’m richer’ are temptations,” Tagle said before the final blessing at the Pontificio Collegio Filippino chapel in Rome.
The pro-prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelization stressed that wealth or social status should never prevent communion with others or block recognition of Christ in the marginalized and those living in poverty.
“There’s no excuse for the lack of communion with everyone because in the end all of us are made of dust. We are all poor. We all depend on God’s providence,” the cardinal added.
Later in the day, Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass marking the Jubilee of the Poor, joined by roughly 6,000 pilgrims at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.
In his homily, the pope urged world leaders to hear the cries of the poorest, calling those with political responsibility to act with justice and care.
“There can be no peace without justice,” the pope said, adding that migration and ignored suffering highlight the myth of progress that leaves many behind. He also thanked charity workers and volunteers, praising their efforts to help the poor, calling them living witnesses to the Church’s faith and solidarity in action.
