Church leader urges officials to embrace integrity on Heroes Day

Cebu’s newly appointed archbishop urged leaders to resist the temptations of greed and power as the nation marked National Heroes Day on Monday.
Archbishop Alberto Uy said heroism is not only about dying for our country but about “living each day with love, sacrifice, and integrity.”
“National Heroes Day is also a call for our leaders to resist the temptations of greed and power,” Uy said.
“Let us pray for our leaders, that they may have the strength to reject corruption and instead choose the path of integrity, service, and justice,” he said.
Uy honored the sacrifices of Filipinos who fought for the country’s freedom, describing heroism not only as acts of valor on the battlefield but also as everyday choices grounded in love, sacrifice, and integrity.
He warned that corruption, dishonesty, and self-interest continue to inflict “moral and spiritual wounds” on society, weakening institutions and burdening citizens.
He also emphasized that heroism is not limited to national figures or public officials, citing parents who work hard for their families, youth who choose honesty, and communities that care for the environment and the poor as examples of modern-day heroes.
“May this National Heroes Day inspire us to reclaim the spirit of courage and sacrifice,” Uy said. “
