Manila cardinal says faith, not politics, sustains hope for Filipinos
Cardinal Jose Advincula of Manila said faith, not politics or human promises, must be the source of hope for Filipinos as the country grapples with disasters, corruption and deep social challenges.
In a homily Dec. 26 at the Manila Cathedral marking the close of the archdiocese’s Jubilee Year of Hope, he addressed doubts about the nation’s future.
“Is there still hope for the Philippines?,” Advincula asked. ”The answer of the Jubilee Year to all of us is clearly yes, there is hope.”
He said the hope Christians celebrate at Christmas comes from Jesus, not from ideologies or political leaders.
“Hope cannot be found in human promises or ideologies. Hope comes only from the promise of God,” he said.
He described the past year as a difficult period for Filipinos, noting that the Jubilee Year, themed “Pilgrims of Hope,” unfolded amid destructive earthquakes, typhoons and scandals involving widespread corruption.
“It is not easy to ignite hope,” Advincula said, “especially during this Christmas season, amid news of vast sums of money being stolen and numerous ghost projects.”
The cardinal said such events have wounded lives, livelihoods and the moral fabric of society, making perseverance in hope a daily struggle for many families.
Advincula urged the faithful to allow the Jubilee Year to bring inner renewal, saying hope must be lived and shared, not merely celebrated. “We are not just pilgrims of hope, but we must become hope,” he said.
“Let us not waste the grace of the Jubilee. Let us live differently. Let us speak boldly. Let us witness to hope fervently, he added, saying hope is born where poverty and hardship persist.
Before the closing Mass, the archdiocese held a “Camino ng Pag-asa” procession from nearby Villa Immaculada to the Manila Cathedral. Advincula invited the faithful to continue their journey of unity as the Church prepares for the Jubilee of Redemption in 2033, marking 2,000 years since the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
