Manila cardinal urges rule of law, warns against ‘extra-constitutional’ solutions
The head of Manila’s Roman Catholic Church warned against “extra-constitutional” solutions to political problems, urging the public, including the military and police, to uphold the rule of law.
Cardinal Jose Advincula stressed that in public discourse and mass gatherings, emotion must not override reason, and loyalty should remain with democratic principles, not individuals or self-serving political agenda.
“Our loyalty must be to our country and its democratic principles, not to persons, and certainly not to other self-serving motivations,” Advincula said in a Nov. 15 pastoral statement.
He urged citizens to be discerning and verify information before sharing, to resist what he called the “pandemic of lies,” and to let truth guide decisions and actions.
Advincula particularly appealed to the military and police to remain faithful to the Constitution, emphasizing their role in maintaining national stability and protecting democratic institutions.
“I appeal to you to stay faithful to your oath to the flag and our country and not to any particular personality. Your fidelity to the Constitution is vital for the stability and integrity of our republic,” he said.
The cardinal also called for a “spiritual response,” not just pragmatic solutions, to what he described as a “deep moral and spiritual crisis” facing the nation.
He asked the faithful to examine their consciences, reform their lives, and live according to God’s will. “This calls for personal and institutional conversion, so that integrity, accountability, truth, and justice may prevail,” he said.
