Pope Leo XIV chants the Regina Caeli

VATICAN— The crowds at St. Peter’s Square not only witnessed Pope Leo XIV lead the

Regina Caeli prayer but also heard the new pontiff chant the Marian antiphon for the first time.

The Chicago-born pope greeted the faithful from the central loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica at noon on Sunday, May 11 and gave an address calling for an end to wars.

Surprising the crowd, he chanted the Regina Caeli, which takes the place of the Angelus during Eastertide. It expresses the Blessed Mother’s joy at the resurrection of Christ, her son.

In his address, Pope Leo XIV recalled the tragedy of World War II, which, he stressed, caused 60 million deaths.

“In today’s dramatic context of a third world war fought piecemeal … I too appeal to the powerful of the world by repeating these ever-relevant words: never again war!”

The pope then spoke about ongoing conflicts in the Ukraine and Gaza.

“I carry in my heart the suffering of the beloved Ukrainian people,” he said, urging that “every effort be made to reach a true, just, and lasting peace as soon as possible.”

“May all prisoners be freed, and may the children be returned to their families,” he said of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

On Gaza, the pope said: “I am deeply pained by what is happening,” he said. “Let the fighting cease immediately, let humanitarian aid be provided to the exhausted civilian population, and may all hostages be released.”

Pope Leo XIV also welcomed the ceasefire between India and Pakistan. “I hope that, through the upcoming negotiations, a lasting agreement may soon be reached,” he said.

He entrusted his appeals to Mary Queen of Peace, “so that she may present it to the Lord Jesus and obtain for us the miracle of peace.”

Mass near the tomb of St. Peter

In the morning, the pope descended into the Vatican Grottoes and offered Mass near the tomb of Saint Peter.

The Mass was concelebrated by Fr. Alejandro Moral Anton, prior general of the Order of Saint Augustine.

The pope had been prior of the order before becoming bishop of Chiclayo in Peru and the cardinal and prefect of the Vatican Dicastery of Bishops.

The Holy See Press Office said that after the Mass, Pope Leo XIV prayed before the tombs of his predecessors and stopped before the niche of the Pallia, a small shrine to Saints Peter and Paul.

The niche displays woolen stoles symbolizing the “unity between the Pope and metropolitan archbishops across the world,” it said.
